Our Engagement Story: Sept. 5, 2009

As most of you know, I live in Japan, working with The Navigators here. Jason & I started dating in March, after he saw a picture of me, asked others about me, couldn't get me out of his mind, and mutual friends connected us. The first date of my life was with him in Kearney on March 13, 2009, while I was on a spring break trip with Japanese students. We continued dating long-distance via Skype, and needless to say, things couldn't have gone better! In July, Jason came to visit me in Japan for 3 weeks. We had a great time together! And in September, I went to the States to visit him over our summer vacation here in Japan. And so the engagement story begins...

I flew into Colorado Springs & spent a few days at The Navigators' headquarters. Jason drove out & met me in the Springs on Friday, Sept. 4th - what a glorious reunion! Saturday was our day to have fun and catch up before heading back to Nebraska together on Sunday. So Saturday we decided to go for a hike. We drove a bit North of the Springs, asked a guy at a gas station for directions to a good hike in the area, and headed to our trail: Crag's. After hiking for about an hour, we decided to stop and rest before heading back to the car. We found the perfect log, stretching across the wide, beautiful path, in the middle of the forest. I was loving the view from our little seat. Jason asked me how I was doing, and I told him I felt the best I had all week (jet lag + high altitude = not feeling so good). He said, "I was trying to think of fun and creative things to do together, like hiking, and I know when you get goofy you like to beat-box, but you never have anyone to rap with you. So, I wrote a rap so you'd have someone to beat-box with. But you have to beat-box in order to hear the rap." What! It was such a ridiculous idea! I beat-box when I'm goofy at karaoke in Japan with my little group of friends. But in the middle of the forest, just me and him?! He got out his journal with the rap written in it. I couldn't stop laughing, it was so ridiculous!! But I was curious what he'd written, because I know he doesn't really write poetry, let alone raps! So finally, I started beat-boxing, breaking up a few times because I couldn't stop laughing. It was a pretty funny scene! The rap was about me and him, how we met, how we've been saved by Jesus, the things about the Lord that we both treasure, the things he likes most about me, and when he started this last part, I realized what he was doing (of course I'm still beat-boxing, mind you...):

Here we go, he's gettin' some nerve
He aims to protect, comfort, love and serve
Now's the time to get on one knee
Amanda Dawn Balcom
Will you marry me?

"YES!!!!!!!!!" I knew what to say! And then he got down on one knee, pulled the ring out, and said, (for the first time), "Mandy, I love you. And I will love you forever if you'll be my wife. Will you marry me?" And with great excitement I said "YES!!!" one more time! And we hugged for a really long time. He had done a great job of distracting me with the rap, so I had no idea he was going to propose right then.

And after that super long hug, we started to walk back. 10 minutes later we saw a couple coming up on the trail, and I said to Jason, "I have to tell them!" And so as we got closer I said, "Hey, how's it going? We just got engaged!!!!" And they said congratulations, were super excited, asked to see the ring, and we introduced ourselves. They'd just recently gotten married and were pretty jazzed with us. They offered to take our picture, but we didn't have either of our cameras since all of our batteries were dead :( But, so kindly, they offered to take our picture with their camera and email us the photos. It was SO nice of them! Thus we have the pictures that we do of our engagement.

That's it! That's our story! We're pretty stoked, and we're planning to get married this May... we can't wait!! We are so thankful for the fun way that God brought us to each other & for the journey he's leading us on together!

I'm back in Japan, finishing out my term here with the BEST Club. I'll head home to Nebraska in December, seizing every possible opportunity here until I board the airplane. God has done so much in the two years that I've been here!

Tiny Little Footprints

Today was sunny, warm, and beautiful! Jesus wooed me off to the beach to pray. As I was walking along, I saw these little footprints, prayed, and couldn't help writing:

Such tiny little footprints
scattered upon the black sand.
A little child walked along this beach
not so long ago.
Little prints next to big prints,
perhaps from mom or dad.
A little lady or a little man,
a dark haired, dark eyed child,
with little footprints in the sand.
With the mighty ocean so close,
and the roar of the waves behind me,
I stopped and knelt down,
placing my hands upon those footprints.
And Jesus led me to pray
for the soul of the little child
who left those little footprints.
That the little lady or little man
from whom those footprints came
would know the depth of His love,
would bring this people to His feet,
would reach the nations for His glory.
Behind these little footprints in the sand
is a little life,
a child created by God.
O that he or she would one day know Him!
What a mighty privilege
to be in this land
to walk upon this beach
to pray for the little ones
who leave precious footprints in the sand.

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." - Mt. 19:14

It's a brownie-batter day!

I totally made a batch of brownies just to eat the batter! The batter is SO much tastier than the finished product, at least in my book! It's a crazy day- just needed a little snack :)

Jesus is so Beautiful

The past month or two, God has really been doing some neat things in my heart, and in my relationship with Him. The short version is that He’s healing hurts and setting me free from feeling like I need to please other people (and other lies I've come to believe). This week I was driving in my car, listening to some tunes. I’ve heard this Sara Groves song a hundred times before, but that day, it hit me in a new way. I felt like the words she was singing, were the very lyrics of my heart these past few weeks:

Jesus You’re Beautiful (Sara Groves)
Jesus, bright as the morning star
Jesus, how can I tell you
How beautiful you are to me
My Jesus, song that the angels sing
Jesus, dearer to my heart
Than anything
Sweeter than spring time
Purer than sunshine
Ever my song will be
Jesus, You’re beautiful to me

This song resounds so well with me at this moment, because in a deeper way than ever before, Jesus really is dearer to my heart than anything.

Next up on the playlist was Amazing Grace, Tomlin stlye. Yet again this old old hymn was brought to new life as the words echoed in my heart with greater meaning than ever before:

Amazing Grace - My Chains are Gone (Chris Tomlin)
Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see
Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear, the hour I first believed

My chains are gone, I’ve been set free
My God my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood his mercy rains
Unending love, amazing grace

The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be, as long as life endures

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, the sun forbear to shine
But God who called me here below, will be forever mine
You are forever mine

My chains are gone, I have been set free. His mercy pours down on me daily. Unending love, truly truly amazing grace. I am forever his!

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come." Thank you Jesus for redeeming my life, for setting me free from what the world, and others want from me, for holding me ever so near as you heal my hurts, and for fixing my eyes on you, for making me a new creation.

Question: What songs has God spoken to you through?

Celebrating a Language Victory!

Today marked a new language victory for me as I went to the doctor all by myself, and it was successful! Apart from confusing the receptionist when she asked what my illness was today, it went pretty well. The doctor speaks some English, and I managed to use a little Japanese to describe my symptoms and to tell him it was basically the same as the last time. This is definitely something worth celebrating... at least when I get over this cold. (Thanks Margery for encouraging me to give it a shot, and for being just a phone call away for any translation needs!)

More Frosting on Cookies or in Tummies?

This video cracks me up every time I watch it! I was decorating cookies with my brother's family while I was in Nebraska over Christmas. It was so much fun! Definitely more frosting in tummies than on cookies!

Jess comes to Japan!

In September Jess visited for a week and a half, and it was GREAT! What a huge blessing!! Top two highlights: chatting over coffee at the cafe, & watching a movie at the theater, complete with pop and popcorn :)

Crazy kids roaming Tokyo!

Don't worry, we were not lacking for fun and laughter!

How fun to meet Hiromi & Miwa for dinner and a night view of Tokyo!

Adventures in Hokkaido...

At the end of August we took an 11 day trip to Japan's Northern Island, Hokkaido. 35 of us crammed into a small bus and a big van, driving 16 hours, catching an 8 hour ferry and then touring the island, staying a few days here, a few days there. It was a great time for getting to know our freshmen friends better, and personally I LOVED the scenery!! 11 days is a long time to travel with college students, particularly when you don't know much of the language, but we had a great week couple of weeks together!

Hokkaido is SOOOO beautiful! All of the flat, green farmland reminded me of home! It was nice to be in such a spacious place compared to the packed-in city. Isn't God an amazing Creator?!!

What's a trip to Hokkaido without a visit to the zoo? These little guys were my favorite!

We cooked most of our meals together over a campfire. Here Saki and I seemed to be enjoying our veggie cutting duties.

We helped dig a pond at the campsite we stayed at for several days.

Yes, that is ME, eating CRAB! It was ok :) I think Hikari enjoyed it more that me!

Winding up the old pitching arm for a fun afternoon of softball. And Elbert steps up to bat...

Lighthouse Girls

As roommates, we've been enjoying time together with our two newest roommates Johanna & Kathryn who are here with the summer team. Last week we went out for coffee at a local shop. I love these girls!!

Kathryn, Mandy, Nami, Aki & Johanna

Soccer, soccer, soccer!!!

Last weekend I went to my first soccer game. Soccer is incredibly popular here, and we only sat for a few minutes during the half-time. It was crazy, loud, and very fun! Would have been more fun if our team had won, but... maybe next time!

Sophomore Dinner...

Recently I hosted a dinner party for the sophomores. The food was tasty & the time together was great!

My personal haven...

When I first moved here, I had a futon on the floor, a few shelves, and a rack to hang my clothes on. After acquiring a few more pieces of furniture and spending some time with a friend's sewing machine, I'm now LOVING my little room. Design is a high value for me, as is rest, so having an asthetically pleasing room is such a blessing to me! Living in a different culture is exhausting, so its so nice to come home to a place that is restful and relaxing!

More crazy English signs...

This vending machine gave me a good laugh:

Of course Americans do the same thing when wearing t-shirts or even tattoos with Chinese or Japanese characters, not having a clue what it REALLY says! (Those of you considering a Chinese tattoo may want to do a little research first!)

Mandy's Friday English class...

My Friday night English class has been a great opportunity to learn and strengthen friendships. We always have a lot of fun!

Nami, Me & Mayu, enjoying Sprite floats after class.
